Why brain teasers are good for you
The best teasers can't be brute-forced — they reward questioning your first assumption and reframing the problem. That's the same flexible thinking measured by the critical thinking test and the logical reasoning test. One honest caveat, because plenty of puzzle sites skip it: getting better at teasers mostly makes you better at teasers. The most thorough review of brain-training research — Simons and colleagues in Psychological Science in the Public Interest — found solid evidence that people improve at the trained task, much weaker evidence that the gains carry over to everyday thinking, and little support for the broad claims made in brain-game marketing.
